New years resolutions are a bust because a fundamental part of our reptilian brain immediately raises roadblocks when it detects any major ‘change.’
Happy New Year from Georgian Dental

The way to bypass the reptilian brain, according to UCLA psychologist and organizational consultant Dr. Robert Maurer is by making those changes low frequency and very, very small. By not triggering the defensive response. Dr. Maurer’s findings shows that “Kaizen” can create lasting change, one small step at a time.

As a family tradition, I have our kids go through setting goals around the 1st of January for the new year. Email me if you’d like the Guide that I use with the kids. There are 8 key areas for which we set goals for. Among the big hits in 2015 was being able to knock off a few items on my personal bucket list, including a visit to the Dry Tortugas and a truncated hike down walls of the Grand Canyon – both experiences I highly recommend. In retrospect, highly dangerous considering that most of the ledges to the Canyon rim does not have any railings and an unfortunate spill over the edge is likely a “recovery mission” not a “rescue.”

On a lighter note, my kids were ecstatic when they pointed out a few goals that I had not succeeded on (email me about The Goal Guide and I’ll share that bit of embarrassment about me) but the lesson to them is that these are goals. Goals work if they are designed with a few key criteria in mind and ABSOLUTELY require a psychological safety net that can mean the difference between an abandoned attempt by the time March rolls around, or the successful implementation of a new habit and change life for the better. I’m a big fan of lessons learned especially when traveling abroad so tell me about what’s your biggest insight or mind expanding moment the last time you left our shores in the comments section below.
