Even with 100% coverage, you may still have to pay a balance for two main reasons:

The CDCP pays based on its own established fee grid, which is often lower than the fee guides used by provincial dental associations and individual dental offices.

• Your responsibility: If your dentist’s fee for a service is higher than the amount the CDCP covers, you are responsible for paying the difference.

The CDCP focuses on essential dental care to prevent and treat oral disease, but it explicitly excludes many common procedures.

Excluded services:

• Teeth whitening and veneers
• Orthodontic treatments (braces, aligners) for aesthetic reasons
• Dental implants, bridges, and associated procedures such as bone grafting
• Mouthguards or night guards
• TMJ (jaw joint) treatments
• Fillings where there is wear or erosion, but no obvious decay

• Exams:

   

  • 1 recall exam every 12 months
  • New patient exam: 1 every 60 months
  • Maximum of 3 exams (of any kind) per 12 months
• Scaling:

   

  • 0.5 unit (ages 0–11)
  • 1 unit (ages 12–16)
  • 4 units (ages 17+) per 12 months
• Polishing: 0.5 unit per 12 months
• Fluoride:

   

  • 1 × every 6 months (ages 0–16)
  • 1 × every 12 months (ages 17+)

• Fillings and root canals:

   

  • Basic procedures covered
  • Complex cases require pre-authorization
• Crowns:

   

  • Pre-authorization required
  • 1 per tooth every 8 years
  • A maximum of 4 total every 10 years
• Dentures:

   

  • Complete dentures covered
  • Partial and immediate dentures require pre-authorization

Every year, after you have filed your previous year’s taxes and before the end of June, as the program runs from July 1 to June 30.
